I’m looking for some pet insurance that will cover things like kennel cough. I have 3 dogs and 2 have been exposed to it once already and may be exposed to it again because we adopted another puppy from the shelter. We already lost one puppy from it so we are looking for some insurance we can afford.

Best answer:

Answer by Johnny
I have been considering getting animal health insurance for my dogs and I’ve looked at AKC health insurance and I’ve looked at Purina’s. I can’t honestly see any benefit in getting health insurance for my dogs. It looks like it runs $ 50 a month per dog. I have two dogs. That’s $ 1200 a year. What I’ve seen is extremely low limits on AKCs insurance and high deductiables on Purina’s. It’s a rip off in my opinion. But some of the companies that provide it are PetCare, Embrace, Pets Best, AKC and Purina.

Do You Know Which Pet Insurance You Should Get?

If you have just got a pet, you most likely will not know that there are a variety of ways in which you can protect your pet. As your pet grows on you, so will its age and no time is sooner than now to get it a pet insurance.

To get started, let’s get you familiarized with three types of pet insurance:

1) Pet Life Insurance

As veterinary care becomes more and more expensive, it only makes sense that you should get a pet life insurance. Not only will it help you in taking care of hefty medical bills but your pet should be able to live a healthy life because you are able to take it to see the vet for its routine check ups or shots.

In most cases, pet life insurance would also protect your pet from injuries that may affect them and get preventive care under the plan. Some pet life insurance plans will also provide your pet coverage for illnesses after thirty days of taking the plan.

This is how a pet life insurance will work for you. If the pet becomes injured or has fallen sick, all you have to do is to take it to a licensed veterinarian and pay them for their services after which you can submit a claim along with relevant receipts.

However before taking out a pet life insurance policy, you may need to consider a few necessary issues such as:

i) What should be covered by the insurance policy

ii) Different levels of pet insurance

iii) Limits of pet insurance

          ]]>

iv) Whether the plan will cover hereditary condition

v) You should consider the means to pay the premium

vi) You should know if the policy provides third party liability or not

vii) Whether there will be any payment when the pet dies.

You should also get a pet life insurance in the event your pet deliberately injures another pet or a person in which you may have to pay a sum of money for compensation.

There are different types of pet life insurances in which you have to compare prices, consider policy excess, get lifelong cover, and consider all benefits available. You also have to understand the small print to be well informed.

2) Travel Pet Insurance

Travel pet insurance basically put, is going to help you take care of your pet by the same way as a regular insurance, but when you travel. This means that if your pet gets sick or hurt, you will not be able to use your regular pet insurance to take care of your pet but you can use your travel pet insurance.

You can purchase a temporary policy that will give you travel pet insurance. This policy will generally last a number of days or even weeks. During this period of time if your pet gets sick or injured, you are going to be able to take advantage of the policy to pay for your pet’s recovery.

Another type of travel pet insurance provides your pet protection in case you have to ship it some place. This type of travel insurance covers these costs and anything that might go wrong when you have arrived to your destination.

3) Embrace Pet Insurance

Embrace pet insurance allows you to customize your pet insurance policy. This means that you can decide on what you want to include or not include in your embrace pet insurance policy.

All of embrace pet insurance policies comes with the basic built-in coverage such as: accidents and illness, genetic conditions, cancer, alternative and complementary therapies, hospitalization, surgery, laboratory and diagnostic testing and drugs administered by your vet.

The basic coverage of the embrace pet insurance policy is quite complete already that even if you do not add in for more services, your pet is being protected enough.

When customizing your embrace pet insurance, you can make it suit your budget and the needs of your pet. You can opt for your policy maximum, the deductible, co-pay and other options that can help you make your policy more suitable for you and your pet.

However it takes the age, health and status of your pet that will determine the parameters on how you can customize your embrace pet insurance policy. For example, if you have a cat and it is relatively young, healthy and stays indoors most of the time, you may be able to take up a policy that will cost you less. You have to evaluate the policy closely and find out where you can save some money.

How to Protect Your Pet for Less

We share the secret to finding quality pet insurance that doesn’t cost the earth.

Whether you share your home with a cat, a dog, or something more exotic, there’s no denying that pets are an expensive addition to the family, not least when they get sick.

As there is no NHS equivalent for animals, owners are left to foot the bill when their furry friends are under the weather and, as even basic treatment can end up costing thousands, pet insurance is something of a necessity in making sure that if your pet does get sick you can afford to help them to get better.

Although some see it as unnecessary, those who have had to fork out for expensive veterinary fees in the past will swear by the financial protection that pet insurance provides and, as with most things this is a lesson better learned sooner rather than later.

As with any kind of insurance there are a whole range of policies available from different providers and while this can be a little overwhelming it’s actually a good thing as comparing pet insurance quotes can really help you to save. Once you’ve decided on the type of cover you need you can enlist the help of pet insurance comparison sites to shop around for pet insurance compare the different options available and protect your pet with the best pet insurance policy for less.

To make finding the right cover hassle free, we share our top tips for what to look for in a cheap pet insurance policy:

Levels of cover

The major difference between pet insurance policies tends to be the level of cover offered against the cost of veterinary bills. As this is a major factor in determining both policy premiums and the level of protection provided for your pet it’s important to understand your options when you compare pet insurance plans so that you can choose a level of cover that suits your budget and requirements.

The three most common levels of cover offered by insurers are:

Limited cover policies – Designed to provide assistance with the cost of treatment for short term illness and accidents, policies of this type tend to limit both the amount paid out and duration of the cover (typically 12 months) available for each condition. However, because of this, limited cover policies tend to be the cheapest pet insurance option available and can provide an incredibly affordable means of protecting your pet (and your wallet) against the unexpected.

Capped cover policies – This type of insurance will specify a maximum amount covered for each diagnosed condition, however this will be available to claim against throughout the life of the policy. For this reason, while a little more expensive, policies of this type tend to provide better protection against longer term ailments such as eczema and asthma, although again, once the maximum amount has been paid out the condition will no longer be covered. Having said that, this type of policy can provide a good compromise between cover and cost.

          ]]>

Lifelong cover policies – Lifelong cover policies tend to be the most expensive option, however they do provide the most comprehensive protection for you and your pet as they fully protect against the cost of both short term and long term illnesses. This type of policy will usually specify an amount claimable for each condition however; this will be reset each year on renewal so that any ailment your pet is diagnosed with will receive treatment indefinitely.

What else is covered?

While veterinary fees are often the most important aspect of pet insurance most policies offer other benefits designed to provide financial protection against a wide range of eventualities. Features to look out for when you compare pet insurance UK include:

Third party liability – This is included to some extent in most pet insurance policies and is a necessary addition as it protects you financially against legal action should your pet cause injury or damage to person or property either directly (i.e. a bite or scratch) or indirectly (i.e. your pet causes a car accident by running into the road).

Advertising costs – Many providers will offer a specified amount to cover the cost of advertising and reward to help with recovery if your pet goes missing.

Complementary medicine – Some providers will cover the cost of specified complementary treatments if they’re deemed necessary for your pets recuperation after sickness or injury.

Overseas travel – If you are planning to take your pet abroad at some point in the future its important to ensure that the protection of their pet insurance policy is extended overseas.

Boarding costs – Some policies will pay out a certain amount to cover boarding fees if you are taken into hospital and have no one else to look after your pet.

Holiday compensation – Some pet insurance policies will pay out an amount in compensation if you need to cut short or cancel a pre-booked holiday because your pet has fallen ill.

Loss or death – Many insurers will pay out compensation for the loss or death of your pet and some may also contribute to the cost of cremation or burial.

What’s not covered?

As pet insurance policies differ in the level of cover they offer it’s important to familiarise yourself with the small print before purchasing so that you’re aware what’s covered and what’s not. However, common exclusions to look out for include:

Existing conditions – Few pet insurance policies will cover the treatment of pre-existing conditions. Having said that it’s always best to disclose any problems your pet has upfront as future claims may be invalidated if you’re found not to be completely honest.

Hereditary conditions – Pedigree dogs often suffer from problems that have a hereditary basis and some insurers will exclude their treatment from your cover.

Routine checkups – Few pet insurance policies will pay out for routine checkups, vaccinations or worming. However, it is still important to keep treatments such as these up to date.

How much will it cost?

The cost of your pet insurance UK policy will be determined by a number of factors including your pet’s age, its breed and your location (premiums tend to be more expensive in the south to cover the more expensive veterinary fees). Your pets current health will also play a role in determining your premium as will the excess associated with your policy.

Most pet insurance providers allow you to reduce the cost of your policy by increasing the excess you will need to cover in the event of a claim and this can be a good option providing your pet is in good health and you set the excess at an affordable amount.

However, a word of caution on this; some providers offer you the option of paying a ‘co-excess’. This involves paying out a certain percentage of any claim and while it can reduce premiums it tends to be worth avoiding as if your pet requires expensive treatment you’ll be left paying a large percentage of the bill, you will need to watch out for this when you make your pet insurance comparisons.

So, while there are a lot of options to consider, by comparing the different pet insurance policies and levels of cover available you should be able to find cheap pet insurance for dogs, cats, horses, rabbits or any other animal you keep as a pet so that you can cover the cost of expert care for your pet when they need it most.

I’ve looked at the ASPCA, however I’m not impressed with their insurance. If I read correctly a long time ago it is covered but only for the year they get it. So if a dog got cancer in Nov of 2010 then by Jan of 2011 the cycle begins again and the coverage for the cancer is dropped as it is not a pre-existing condition. (Although you had the insurance before.) I’ve noticed others do that too and it seems to be common. Does any one know of a good pet insurance company? Thanks.

Answer by MamaBas
Speaking from experience, and we’ve had too many cancers, end days (when they were elderly) over the years, I’d save your money. I could yet live to regret it, but we’ve never carried insurance on our hounds, apart from the first one. This was because we had numbers which made it prohibitive, but insurance companies are not there for you, they are there to make money. And for that reason I prefer to keep my money in my own Bank Account. What finishes it for me, apart from our numbers, is the excess most policies have. In the UK most now won’t pay the first £50 – 75 of a bill, and surprise, surprise, most vet visits come in well under that figure, so you end up paying a monthly premium AND a vet bill. This doesn’t take into account unexpected big bills of course, but our long-standing vet, before we moved across country, knew us, and if an unexpectedly higher bill did crop up, was happy to let us stage pay. She knew we weren’t going anywhere and would pay her before we put food on the table.

Your decision of course, but I would say now we are down to just 2 hounds, and having had a rather torrid time with vet bills over the past couple of years with our oldies, I looked again at getting my new youngsters insured. No thank you – even with one of mine being a breed with zero problems generally, her monthly premium quote left me thinking I don’t want to BUY the company!!!

I’m looking into getting a dog in the far future and I just want to see what type of pet insurance everyone has and if they think it’s beneficial or not.

Thank you.

Best answer:

Answer by TrupanionPetInsurance.com
Pet insurance is great for unexpected accidents and illnesses (they can get expensive quickly), however it doesn’t always make sense to get coverage for routine/wellness care. Some pet insurance companies offer routine coverage, but it is typically not cost-effective. (Imagine paying an extra $ 200 per year on your premiums for $ 200 worth of routine coverage…) It’s usually best to self-budget for these costs since they are predictable.

A few good questions to ask when researching pet insurance are:
1. Does the policy cover everything? Hereditary and congenital issues?
2. What are the payout limits? Will it be enough money for my worst case scenario?
3. How much does it cover for each condition?
4. What are the pricing and deductible options?
5. Is it an ongoing policy? If my pet has an illness during my first policy year, will it be covered the next policy year?

Be sure to do thorough research – Some plans don’t pay based on your actual bill, but have lists of predetermined dollar amounts that they will pay for each condition which can be shockingly low in many cases. I would recommend getting an actual insurance plan that covers based on your bill so that you are never faced with a difficult and expensive situation when you *thought* you were covered.

We cover 90% of the actual bill for diagnostic testing, treatments, surgeries and medications including emergency and specialist visits. Trupanion is also the only provider to offer a $ 0 deductible option.
Feel free to give customer service a call and get a no-obligation quote to ask all the necessary questions and find out what’s best for you!
