Question by Sannin: Legal Studies Major, but I want a career in insurance but no major offered?
I’m currently a legal major who wants a career within the property liability section of insurance. My major is considered to be within the business school at Temple University in which I have completed numerous upper level business courses, but my main concentration is in the legal field. Do you think that the best way possible for me to break into the insurance industry for a career is by passing professional exams such as the CPCU or ARM? I figured if I passed those exams I would appeal more to an insurance company. Any thoughts or suggestions on what I should do

Talk to your adviser and see if its possible to set up an independent study course for a degree.

You can get the CPCU separately if you want. You can also get your insurance license in your state.
They are not connected with your major but that does not matter. You can get those things you mentioned separately.

Insurance companies require a claims adjuster to have a 4 year college degree. It can be in any major. It does not have to be a major in insurance. Very few colleges offer that.

You can pursue an Associate in Claims (AIC) or CPCU while you look for a job. But it’s not required. And I’ve never really known anyone with out experience that had those. Most insurance companies expect entry level adjusters to have a degree and nothing else. Once you get hired by an insurance company, most companies will pay for you to get your AIC, CPCU or any other designation offered by The Institutes.

Well, getting those designations certainly will give you a leg up on any other competitors.

I’d also suggest going to a local agency, and trying to get a job there during school holidays and summers, filing, or answering phones, or whatnot, to list on your resume.
